That's the lowest anti-scareware score yet with my current set of samples. It scored 1.0 of 10 against rootkits (better than Immunet's perfect 0) and 3.0 against scareware. That's quite a bit better than digital defender, but the current top scorer is Emsisoft Anti-Malware 5.0 ($40 direct, ) with 97 percent detection and a score of 7.4.ĭigital defender fared even worse in tests targeting specific malware types. The free Panda Cloud Antivirus 1.1 (Free, ) detected 86 percent of these threats and scored 5.9 on this test. Almost half the threats digital defender detected were still running after the app allegedly removed them.
That's better than the 54 percent detection score turned in by Immunet Protect Free 2.0 (Free, ), but digital defender did such a poor job of cleaning up what it found that it scored 3.5 of 10 possible points where Immunet (which detected fewer threats) got 3.6. Digital defender detected just 63 percent of the threats. The so-called quick scan took 10 minutes not so quick after all! For testing, I used the full scan in every case. On my standard clean test system, a full scan took under 20 minutes and a second full scan just over 15, which is faster than most. Like many free products, it hasn't been tested by the other big independent labs, so I have to rely on my own real-world testing. This April, it achieved the VB100% award in June it failed. That proved impossible, as the "protection" in question was actually a rogue antivirus that offered no uninstaller and actively resisted manual removal. On one system, though, digital defender insisted that I first uninstall the existing antivirus protection.
